Located along the southwestern coast of the Southern Hump of the Independent State, Swordhaven is thought by some to be one of the most important cities within those lands south of the Tsan and Shortec Ranges. Swordhaven is a well fortified city with a population exceeding 48,000 citizens, 3,000 of which belong to the city's army and another 4,000 acting as sailors and marines within the city's navy. At times of dire straits, Duke Malcom Van Rhinecrout has been know to muster together a military force exceeding 20,000 in order to protect the city.
Because of its proximity to Straney's Light, Swordhaven is a major center of trade and commerce within the Independent State. Ships from as far away as Gallaway are constantly docking along one of Swordhaven's numerous off-shore harbors, bringing in rarities such as silk, precious metals, foreign weapons and armor, and exotic spices.
Employment can always be found within Swordhaven's army and navy, for pirate assaults from the Vast Sea and military advances from neighboring duchies and baronies are constant. Those of the thieving and fighting professions are always welcome within the confines of Swordhaven, while those skilled in the arts of nature and holy magic are tolerated. Mages and wizards are rare within Swordhaven, although there is a small school of magic located within the Noble's Quarter of the city. It is rumored that the top advisors of Duke Van Rhinecrout are wizards of powerful abilities, and this is the reason why the attacks from neighboring territories are rarely successful.
Swordhaven is the only city within the Duchy of Rhinecrout, although there are a handful of smaller towns and villages that dot the rich countryside of this small territory. Some say that an alliance was formed several decades past between Swordhaven and the cities of Dagger Bay and Shieldcrest. If such rumors were true and the territories governed by these three cities were to unite as one, a formidable kingdom could be established, encompassing the south and southwest coastline of the Southern Hump of the Independent State.
